The Student Cook

My name is Vanessa and I am currently a university student living off campus. I have been living out of home for almost 2 years now and during that time I discovered that there was no good food blog about cheap cooking for students like me. That is what inspired me to create this website. I wanted to create a website dedicated to easy recipes for students and people on a budget. I focus on meals that make great leftovers as there is nothing I hate more than doing dishes! If you have any recipe Ideas yourself, please feel free to send me an email here and I will try out your recipe and maybe I’ll even add it to the blog!

What to use

My Kitchen Essentials

You don’t need to spend a heap on kitchen equipment if you can’t afford to. But there are some items that I have found to be a must have when cooking for myself.

  • 1 Large frying pan, at least 30cm in diameter or even a large wok (non-stick is preferable)
  • 2 saucepans, one small and one large
  • One cooking spatula
  • One pair of tongs
  • One Large spoon (for serving)
  • One large cutting knife
  • two good cutting boards (one for meat and the other for veggies and the like)
  • 1 large Baking tray
  • 1 casserole dish (with lid)

My Cooking-For-One Philosophy

Since I am cooking for one, mastering the art of leftovers is how I manage to save time in the kitchen, save time cleaning up, and save money. I usually cook up 2 full recipes a week, one on Sunday and one on Thursday. I also do a full food shop Sunday with a list of ingredients I will need for those two meals plus breakfast and lunches. That way I am not tempted to spend more than my budget.

People tend to scoff at leftovers, claiming that they will get tired of eating the same thing over and over again. I understand that mentality, but also understand that I don’t have the time and money to be so picky with my meals. So, my solution is to make meals that are so delicious that I look forward to eating them every single day. I understand that it can be difficult to have a personal menu large enough to feel like you have a good amount of variety week to week, so that is what this website is for!  To expand your recipe knowledge and inspire you to experiment and explore your cheap meal options.
